Pediatric Rehabilitation
Bluffton Regional Medical Center's outpatient pediatric rehabilitation clinic provides physical, occupational and speech therapy to children ranging from infants to teenagers. Therapists coordinate care, deliver therapies and work with other specialists, therapists and physicians in the community and area schools to meet each child's individual needs.

Pediatric Physical Therapy
Physical therapy focuses on skills related to movement. Pediatric PT specialists at Bluffton Regional Medical Center use play to help children improve their abilities and reach their highest level of functional independence while having fun.
Physical therapy focuses on:
- Developmental skills such as rolling, sitting up, standing, walking
- Improving difficulties with walking and running
- Improving balance, coordination and motor planning
- Strengthening, stretching and teaching muscle use
- Assisting families in equipment and orthotic selection
- Promoting lifelong wellness by focusing on endurance training and fitness
- Rehabilitation following orthopedic injuries and surgeries
Pediatric Occupational Therapy
A child's "job" is to be a kid. The occupational therapists at Bluffton Regional Medical Center use play-directed therapy to help develop the skills children need to live life to the fullest. This is achieved by:
- Increasing independence in daily living skills (feeding, dressing, grooming)
- Facilitating developmental play skills
- Advancing fine motor and eye/hand coordination skills
- Improving sensory processing skills (organization, self-regulation and behavioral state)
- Developing visual motor/visual perceptual skills, including writing and coloring
- Addressing orthopedic complications and helping increase function through splinting and forced use therapy as needed
Pediatric Speech Therapy
Speech therapy helps children communicate with others by building verbal, social and cognitive skills. Therapists use fun, play-based therapy to provide children with the skills and confidence needed to relate to the world.
Speech therapy focuses on:
- Learning to say sounds properly in order to be more easily understood
- Developing proper control of the vocal and respiratory system
- Improving language comprehension and expression
- Improving oral motor and swallowing function
- Developing attention, memory, abstract reasoning, awareness and executive functions
- Assisting families in the use of augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) systems
